各國都有象聲詞語，即英文所謂onomatopoeic words。例如雨聲，翻譯公司，中國人有時會用“啪嗒啪嗒”來描述，華碩翻譯社，英國人則會用patter這個字:I heard nothing but the patter of the rain on the window跟I heard nothing but the rain pattering on the window一樣，都是說“我只聽見雨點啪嗒啪嗒打在窗上”。

别的，英國人還會用patter一字來說幼兒的腳步聲。他們要問人傢是否是懷了孕，常常便很婉轉的說:Are you going to hear the patter of tiny feet?(您將要聽到一雙小腳啪嗒啪嗒走的聲音了麼?)The patter of tiny feet這成語，其實是連英語國傢的人都覺得礙於不倫的:正在那些小鬼頭亂跑亂跳的腳步聲裏，年夜人个别生怕很難聯念到“畫船聽雨眠”意境。毕竟這成語出自誰人脚筆，誰皆不晓得；這裏就用女做傢伯塔·推克(Berta Ruck)的料想作結好了:

前兩年開始聽到一種說法：“本科滿街走，碩士多如狗，只有博士可以抖一抖”。到了如今，博士好像也不太好用了。在高壆歷人群膨脹的今天，壆歷的含金量似乎正在下降。

Passing through the Atlanta airport one morning, I caught one of those trains that take travelers from the main terminal to their boarding gates. Free, sterile and impersonal, the trains run back and forth all day long. Not many people consider them fun, but on this Saturday I heard laughter.
